In November 2016, Craig Silverman – a Canadian journalist – first wrote about the phenomena of fake news for BuzzFeed News. Mr. Silverman, who has since received global recognition for his important work, exposed the reality of fraudulent news that is deliberately created and shared (largely on Facebook) for monetary gain.
Unlike news satire, fake news websites seek to mislead, rather than entertain, readers. Their motivation is often financial, political, or other gain.
Apple CEO Tim Cook told The Telegraph during a visit to London that he believes fake news is “killing people’s minds in a way.”
Mr. Cook insisted that the problem of fake news is serious across much of the world, and everyone needs to be made more aware of it. He called for a “massive campaign;” one that speaks to every demographic. “It has to be ingrained in the schools, it has to be ingrained in the public.” he urged.
